Daniil Medvedev – Stefanos Tsitsipas Match Prediction | 11-11-2019 09:00

He did well to make the semi-finals of the ATP 500 in Beijing last week and is in the semi-finals here again. He will additionally be buoyed by his quarter-final win in a dramatic match against Roger Federer, his first top ten win of the year, putting him very much back in contention for the London finals. After a below par season, defending ATP Tour Finals champion Alexander Zverev looked like he was not going to qualify for this years version until a few weeks ago. However, in a turnaround of events since the Laver Cup, the young German has looked every bit more confident.

A first ever Masters 1000 title will definitely be something he will now be hoping for this weekend. Young Stefanos Tsitsipas year has gone full circle from beginning strong by being an Australian Open semi-finalist, followed by a good clay season, but then a dip on grass and the US hard courts, only to revive in the Asian swing in the last couple weeks. He has defeated all the Big Three this year now, with his quarter-final victory against Novak Djokovic, as well as secured his spot at the Tour Finals in London.

Despite the head-to-head a very exciting battle is on the cards, between the clinical Medvedev and the flamboyant Tsitsipas. Expect Tsitsipas to win his first ever match against Medvedev in three sets. It is time for the law of averages to catch-up, and the tide to turn. It is tough to pick a winner and will really depend on who plays better on the given day.

However, the Serb had looked in unbeatable form since returning from the shoulder injury he sustained at the US Open, winning the Tokyo Open last week without dropping a set, and cruising through his opening two matches here in Shanghai. Not that the result was a surprise in itself he had beaten the world number one once before. Tsitsipas enjoyed one of the best wins of his career on Friday, coming from a set down to beat the top seed Novak Djokovic.

The World No.4 might have done plenty of winning heading to Shanghai this week, but he had only ever managed just a single main draw win at the Chinese city before this weeka straight-sets win over Zhang Ze last year. The third seed then proceeded to put Fabio Fogninis London chances in real jeopardy with a domineering straight-sets win in which he conjured up a staggering 91% points won on his first serve. He doubled that tally when he eased past Cameron Norrie in the second round and then benefited from a disastrous collapse by Vasek Pospisil to get a foothold in his third-round match.

The Serb's defense could not withstand the onslaught of the Greek's strong attacking game. The close matches helped to come back from the brink as he stunned World number 1, Novak Djokovic, in three sets in the quarter-finals. Nole, the defending champion, raced ahead taking the first set 6-3. But, Tsitsipas fired on all cylinders taking the remaining two sets 7-5, 6-3 to storm into the semifinals.

It was to the credit of the Greek that he survived the loss of the opening three games of the match, and, although he lost the first set, he went toe to toe with the Serb in the second. He got a vital service break in the 12th game to level the match, and then broke the Djokovic serve early in the third, holding on to close out the match.

The 22-year-old will look to build-on last weekends semifinal showing in Beijing and next up will be Matteo Berrettini who was also victorious on Friday. Qualification for ATP Finals would be another fantastic addition to what has been his career-best season on tour. Berrettini would certainly take a massive step to achieve that goal should he beat Zverev. He hammered down six aces, won 82% of first serve points, and did not lose a single service game. The big-serving Italian was imperious in knocking out the fourth seed Dominic Thiem in straight sets. It was a testament to Berrettinis massive serve which has been a major weapon in the rapid progress he has made this year.

Medvedev had a phenomenal late summer where he played in five consecutive finals, won his first Masters 1000 in Cincinnati, played an incredible US Open final losing to Rafael Nadal and in turn secured a spot at the Tour Finals in London. He has looked to continue his form this week in Shanghai, making it to the semi-finals without dropping a set, despite being pushed intermittently by Vasik Pospisil and Fabio Fognini in previous rounds.

Although the Russian confessed he doesnt feel any animosity towards the Greek, he underlined that he is not friends with the 21-year-old. Tsitsipas punched his ticket to the Nitto ATP Finals courtesy of Medvedevs win over Fognini, and shortly after, he went on to upset the defending champion Djokovic for the second time in his career. Medvedev and Tsitsipas do not see eye-to-eye following their infamous spat at the Miami Masters in 2018.

Alexander Zverev overcame a second set wobble against Roger Federer, in which he spurned five match points, to win 6-3 6-7 6-3 and move up a spot into seventh in the Race To London with just four weeks remaining of the regular ATP season. It would be even more important for Zverev to qualify as he is reigning champion and could lose a huge chunk of ranking points if he is unsuccessful. It was a much-needed victory for Zverev ,who is looking to create some breathing space as the battle for the last two spots is quite congested. The German was mighty impressive at the English capital last season as he beat Federer and Djokovic en route to the biggest title of his fledgling career.

However, Medvedev has won all of those and this should follow suit, as he looks to be the player to beat right now, barring Rafael Nadal, at the incoming ATP Finals. The Russian is used to winning in two sets but that looks unlikely here against the Greek youngster, who has come through deciders in his last two matches in Shanghai and has taken a set off of Medvedev in each of their four previous matches. This is a tough match to call considering the feats just displayed by Stefanos Tsitsipas in beating the world number one Novak Djokovic and Medvedevs commanding win against Fognini.
