Our Prediction:

Huddersfield Giants will win

Huddersfield Giants – Catalans Dragons Match Prediction | 13-09-2019 14:45

With no less than seven first team players unavailable, Catalans will be able to take full advantage and get their home campaign off to the perfect start. Catalans are strong at home and with a big pack to roll them down the field, the Giants' injury woes will be difficult to overcome. Both of these teams got off to an under-par start in Round 1 last week but it's Huddersfield who will have the greater concern heading into Round 2.

With the likes of Roby and Hodgson in their 30s now, the future looks bright in the number nine shirt. Although born in Swaziland, he was raised in Halfiax and has already achieved an England Knights call up. Huddersfield look a different side when Leeming is controlling them in the middle of the park. Kruise Leeming really is a one-to-watch player for a potential England hooking role.

Huddersfield Giants vs Catalans Dragons: Prediction

Catalans were able to record a much needed win against Leigh, winning 37-26, in a 6 tries to 4 triumph, as they managed to turn a dominant first half of 28-8 into a victory, despite scoring just 9 points. This win sees them stay in the top-8, albeit on the precipice level with St Helens, on 7 competition points, though a loss in this match would see the Giants leapfrog them. Jason Baiteri led the tackle counts for Catalans with an impressive 43 against Leigh, while Australian half Luke Walsh was very good with 2 try assists, 6 goals and a field goal.

Margin predictors in this one across the boards of many bookies suggest we are in for a very close encounter to kickoff the round, particularly due to the recent dogged type of form displayed by the Giants. Catalans are still missing their marquee signing Greg Bird, who is out injured for at least this weekends double header, and is now joined by other quality forwards Baiteri and Burgess. This is obviously becoming a very troubling injury toll for Catalans.

The Giants fought back from a 14-0 halftime deficit last Friday against the improved St Helens outfit, to record their 2nd draw of the season, affording them a 3-point buffer on Warrington and Widnes, in 10th. The hero was Darnell McIntosh who bagged a pair of tries, while Sam Wood scored also, although Brough was unable to convert the Wood 4-pointer in the dying stages. Kruise Leeming and Ryan Hinchcliffe put in huge defensive efforts, tallying tackle counts well into the 30s, while McGillvary was the leader in meters gained with 135.

New signings will also be wanting to impress as the Super League season of new beginnings continues. With both of these sides getting off to the worst possible start in round 1, Huddersfield, especially, it will be an interesting tussle over in Perpignan to see wholl come out on top in a battle of two teams who many think will be in a fight for a spot in the top 5.

However, we know from previous years, he can make a big performance when needed. McIlorum himself has always been a ball controller. Since his return from his pectoral muscle injury earlier this season, hes taken a while to settle back into the side. Hes also a big character in that Dragons side both on and off the pitch; lets not forget his dog mascots in Catalans final home game last season! Again, Catalans have looked a little lost without him at times as he adds another option in their attack.

With such injuries striking, the Giants will be looking to take advantage of the good timing, of their matchup, and record just a 3rd win of the season. Huddersfield fans will be intrigued to see recruit Mamo play, while stars such as Rapira, Ikahihifo, Hinchcliffe and Leeming will be relied on heavily to provide the inspiration for victory. Expect a fired up Giants outfit, that will be looking to continue their 2nd half form from Friday, when they reversed a 14-0 score to grab a point, and have a huge chance of winning. Undoubtedly, Brough and others will be working on their goalkicking.

With extra games included in the Easter weekend festivities a pair of victories could really kick-start either of these sides seasons, if 4-points could be obtained, amongst fatiguing conditions. Though, the cold wet predicted conditions will be of no assistance in this effort; new recruit Jake Mamo will surely be under pressure, and will be key for the Giants chances.

Both Huddersfield and Catalans collected valuable victories last week as they helped their respective predicaments but will need to back that up with another win here. Despite both racking up big scores last week, this could be a close contest which could go either way and is very difficult to call. Both have suffered with inconsistency this season and it will depend which side turn up but if the Dragons can match last weeks performance, they can be the ones to edge this contest.
