Introduction

I still can’t believe how old this book is. I got this book from my immediate older brother’s library. I only remember this because my brother signed this on its first page, “Illuminator. Rhema’s lib. 4-07-2013. His then phone number.” Indeed this book, Battlefield of the Mind, is an illuminator. In this post, I will share from the book words of wisdom, key sentences with bible references, and questions that I think are worthy of reflection.

I started books review to help people discover books that will encourage, inspire, and enrich their live and their walk with God. This is one of those books that I am truly delighted to share. This book review should be seen as an additional resource designed to stand on its own without the book. With the book in perspective, this post will help you get started for first-timers or be a great refresher for returners who want to revisit the book from time to time.

Words of Wisdom from the Battlefield of the Mind

Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.

The wise owl.
  1. The mind is the battlefield. It is a vital necessity that our thoughts align with God’s thoughts.
  2. You cannot live a positive life when your mind is filled with negativity.
  3. A busy mind will miss enlightenment from the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit dwell in us and He knows the mind of God. A mind that is at rest is the one that is receptive to God’s wisdom and revelations.
  4. Doubt comes in form of thoughts that are in negation to the word of God. Thus, if unbelief is likened to disobedience, doubt is at the root of unbelief.
  5. I love this statement from the book, “do your part but don’t try to do God’s part. The load is too heavy to bear and if you are not careful you will break under the weight of it.” So beautifully said.
  6. When you judge others, you are not loving them. Doing unto others as you want them to do to you is a good life principle that will help take away judgement and criticism from your life.
  7. It is impossible to have continual fellowship with a person without having your mind fixed on that person. Thus, a person who has the mind of Christ is a person who is in continual fellowship with God.
  8. I love this statement from the book, “some people live in a wilderness while others are a wilderness.”
  9. Learn to cast your cares upon the Lord but be responsible. Responsibility is doing your own part while casting cares is letting God do His own part.
  10. When you decide to obey God, your action affects other people. Likewise, your disobedience to God will negatively affect others. Choose wisely how you intend to influence others.

References to Scripture

“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 NKJV
Mind Game
  1. The mind is the leader or forerunner of all actions. Thus, our actions are a direct result of our thoughts (Proverbs 23:7; Romans 8:5).
  2. The enemy works tirelessly to feed your minds with lies because he knows that if he can take hold of your thoughts, he can control your actions. There is good news: God is fighting on your side (1 Corinthians 10:13).
  3. The renewal of your heart will be a gradual process so be patient with it (1 Peter 5:10; Romans 8:1).
  4. It is possible to be a Christian and make heaven but still not walk in victory here on earth. You need to renew your mind by meditating on the word of God daily (Romans 12:2; Psalm 119:11; Philippians 4:8).
  5. Worry is the mind racing around, trying to find solution to its situation. It takes humility to not worry and put your trust in God (1 Peter 5:6-7).
  6. Having the mind of Christ means having a ‘God loves me’ mindset (John 3:16; 1 John 4:16).
  7. A God-conscious mind is righteousness-conscious and not sin-conscious (Isaiah 26:3; 2 Corinthians 5:21).
  8. You become word-minded when you receive and mediate on the word of God (Psalm 119:11; James 1:21).
  9. We need to enjoy where we are while we are on our way to where we are going. It is pride that prevents patient waiting (James 5:7; Romans 12:3 Colossians 3:12).
  10. A life of obedience to God is the result of right thinking (Romans 5:19; Ecclesiastes 12:13).

Questions from the Battlefield of the Mind

The important thing is not to stop questioning; curiosity has its own reason for existing.

Albert Einstein
  • In the battlefield of the mind book, particularly in chapter 5, we were encouraged to have ready minds. What does having a ready mind mean to you? How can you daily open your mind to the will of God for you? Do you see the will of God as important in your life than your personal goals and aspirations? Are your personal dreams, goals, and aspirations in line with the will of God for your life?
  • What does it mean to have the mind of Christ? Is it possible to have the mind of Christ and always be complaining? How do we cultivate a lifestyle of gratitude?
  • In the battlefield of the mind, the author talked about how the children of Israel spent forty years completing an eleven-day wilderness trip. She explained that this is because they had a wilderness mentality. What do you understand by the wilderness mindset? What are practical things you can put in place to detect a wilderness mindset? How have you been able to overcome the wilderness season?
  • At the end of the book, the author emphasized how when we focus on God, we think the right things and as a result, we live a righteous and obedient life to God. How does your lifestyle reflect obedience or disobedience to God? What areas of your life have you not yet surrendered to God? What worldly pleasures do you need to sacrifice to have the mind of Christ?

Conclusion for the Battlefield of the Mind

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

Isaiah 55:8-9 NIV

Closing Prayers

  • Salvation Prayer (say this prayer of confession if you desire to dedicate your life to God and trust Him to be Lord over your life): Lord Jesus, I admit that I am a sinner in need of a savior. I am sorry for living my life in accordance with the will of my flesh and my sinful nature. Today, I renounce my covenant and longing for a glorified sinful lifestyle. All my heart desires are the things of God. My Lord and my God, I want to do your will. Forgive me for every time I have tried to initiate or impose my will as your will for my life. Come into my life afresh and make me whole again. I believe you, Jesus Christ of Nazareth, died on the cross, bore my sins, and rose again that I might become the righteousness of God. I accept this invitation to become a child of God. Precious Holy Spirit, come into my life and guide me in all truth. Teach me the ways of the Father as I study scripture. My good God and Heavenly Father, show me where you are already at work in my life and give me a willing and obedient heart to join you in fulfilling your will at your timing, walking in your way at your command, and abiding in a continual fellowship with you. So help me God. Amen
  • Study Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for bringing this reader to this place to learn more about renewing their minds and battling the lies that seek to hinder them. I pray that you reveal to them the power of your truth and help them to recognize the thoughts that are from you, those filled with peace, strength, and hope. May this person reading this be empowered to stand firm against discouragement and doubt, casting aside anything that does not align with your word. Strengthen their minds, Lord, and fill their hearts with your wisdom. Lead them to rely fully on your Spirit to guide, protect, and renew them each day. This I ask in the name of Jesus, our mighty Savior and redeemer. Amen.

“May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.”

2 Corinthians 13:14
